Wallace's Day Of Letterboxing...At Home!!

Hello everyone. It's me, Wallace again. JorvikLB said i could leave another post on here. Lol. Yesterday, (29/7/2008) i was really quite bored. JorvikLB's Parents were both at work so we couldn't drive anywhere to go letterboxing and we certainly couldn't walk!

After Pondering for a while, I had a brilliant idea! i aksed JorvikLB if i could see her Personal Traveler and she sadi yes! As she went to go and get it i got my stamp and logbook ready. Here i am first stamping in the PT logbook, and then stamping in my logbook:

Once we had finnished all this, JorvikLB decided we should check out the garden as there was a letterbox out there aswel! she printed off the clue and we set off.

following the clue, first we went to see Henry the Hedgehog:

Then we looked out for the garden bench, but were stopped by 2 vicious wild animals!

Ok it was just Braken and Tikita the rabbits but Tikita can be a little moody at times! (No Offence)

we finally got to the garden bench and the chimney that the letterbox was supposed to be under:

With a big hand from JorvikLB, i managed to push up the chimney and reach underneath. (i didn't like this bit as it was very spidery! yuck!) we opened the box and began the stamping!

Wallace - The First Trip !

Meet Wallce. He is my personal boxing buddy. he is a little different from the standard BB's that travel around the world. he is one who just stays and letterboxes with me and my family. now over to wallace to tell you all about his first trip!

Hello there! i have been told that you would like to hear about my first letterboxing trip! well i had better get telling then hadn't i ! well first of all JorvikLB woke me up really early and told me to get my stamp and logbook ready because we were going letterboxing! i was really excited and rushed off to find my things.

i then went downstairs to find JorvikLB fiddling around with an old lunchbox and some plastic bags. i then realised she was getting a new letterbox ready to plant!

so straight away i offered to help!

soon after that, we all bundled into the car, and set off for Carlton. at first i enjoyed looking out of the window, but after a while i felt a bit car-sick, so i helped JorvikLB and LNER Express (her brother) look at the clues and see which one(s) we should set out for first.

We eventually arrived and tucked into some 'Sarnies! they were yummy! when we set off to find the boxes, we found the ford, but it turned out to be the wrong one! so we had to start all over again! we had lost about an hour, but still carried on. first of all we set out for "the sickener" but we were very upset to find out it had gone. =[ so we changed tacticks and went to look for Fucshia. and we found it! here is me sat with the box:

We opened it up, and to our suprise, we found a hitchiker!! it was Clip Clop, put out by The Yorkshire Tortise! so we all stamped in an took the HH to put in another box. The next box we set out for was "Red Squirrel." it was quite a walk, but we knew we would be rewarded at the end. but we soon found out otherwise. when we got there, we followed the clue exactley. there was a letterbox shaped hole right by the tree it mentioned, but it was knowhere to be seen. we did fear that it could of been washed away, but were not sure. so, downheartedly, we trudged back to the car and the cluelist. by this time the rain had set in, and there was a river running down the road!

we then looked for the "Seahorse" which we found out we had passed whilst looking for "Fucshia"! that was a lovely spot but we got very wet when stamping in.

after much persuading of Yorkshire Ladybird (mum) we decided to head out for "Box Hunting! No.4 Horsebox"

we headed along the track, took the correct reading of the the compass, and made our way to the part of the clue we needed. the clue clearly stated that the box was on the right hand side of a tree. so we were scrabling around in the trees for well over half an hour! we just could not find the box! JorvikLB was really upset as she loves horses, and was delighted when we found out there was a horse letterbox! Yorkshire Ladybird was just about to give up looking when she moved some forest debris and the familiar sound of plastic rung through the air! she gave it a tug and out came the letterbox! it was then we realised that we were being dim! we were standing the rong side of the trees, so if we were in the right place, we would of been looking on the left of all the trees! we straight away started stamping and taking pictures! the stamps were amazing! very well carved and with amazing details! here is me with our well deserved last find of the day! :

On the way back from finding this, we saw a great hiding place for our new letterbox! so we planted "My Little Pony #1" (Click Link For Clue)

Our First Trip !!

Our First Trip !

For our first trip we went up to Rosedale by the kilns to see if we could find any up there. I was really excited and could not wait to get out there! However my Mum and Brother were not very optimistic and made me have some sandwhiches first.

Eventually we got out there, and started to follow the clue. it took us a while to realise that just because it said "By the kilns" in the clue, didn't mean it was actually in the kilns! we were looking in them for about 15 minuets!

Just when we were about to give up, we re-read the clue, and found out where we had to be. We went down a bank and lo and behold, i moved a suspicious looking rock covering a crevise in a rock and there was our first letterbox!

From here, we followed the next clue we had on our list. this one took us AGES as we kept on looking in the wrong places, and ended up just guessing. it was pure luck that again i moved a suspicious looking rock and there was our second letterbox!

In the back of this letterbox, we found the clues to someother boxes in the area, so after i was forced to go back to the car and eat yet another sandwhich ( "You need it for energy!") we went on the hunt!

The next box was a pleasure to find, as the clue fitted perfectly (it's always good when that happens) and we found it in no time at all! the hiding place was perfect, and unless you knew it was there, you could not see it at all. the place where it was situayed was lower and surrounded by heather, so we were sheltered from the wind, and all noise was kept out. it was delightful! We had a bit of debate about the stamp, as it was a 2 part stamp and we thought the second part was a cuckoo (good job we left it there!) but we stamped and moved on.

The next box on our list was the last on our list, so we were determined to get it! we found the landmark in the clue, and followed it from there. after alot of scrbbling in rocks, we just could not find the box, but were sure we were in the right place. my brother was digging under a rock, and making a mess, so my mum told him to stop as the box would not be down that deep. Famous last words as my brother pulled and out came a black tupperware box!

So our day had been very succesful, and we have never looked back since!!

How I Came About Letterboxing

I first came across letterboxing by reading a book called "Foal In The Fog." I thought it sounded really interesting, so like we all do i googled it. at first i could only find the clues for Dartmoor, and was getting really annoyed, but eventually i found a page with hundreds of NYM letterbox Clues! i was absolutaly delighted!

None of my friends and family had heard of it, and when i explained the principle of it they seemed reluctant to share my enthusiasm. for example my Dad's comment was "What is the point in treking miles and miles for someones lost lunchbox?"

I eventually persuaded my Mum to take me looking for the first letterbox, (Yorkshire Rose Of Rosedale) and after that there has been no stopping us! This website is whre i am going to creat my "Diary" if you like of the letterboxing trips we have been on.
